Deep-sea fishing in the Dominican Republic is becoming more popular due to the growing number of marinas now being built on the island. Across the north coast, you will find everything from state-of-the-art yacht-filled marinas to more picturesque local ports for the local fisherman. Organizing a deep-sea fishing charter in the Dominican Republic is the same as in any other destination but look for a greater concentration in the resort communities.
The deep, crystal clear waters of the West Indies are home to many of the most exciting deep-sea game fish. Species include Amberjack, Barracuda, Bonito, Black Kingfish (Cobia), Dorado (Mahi-Mahi), Grouper, Jack, King Mackerel, Marlin, Porpoise, Redfish, Sailfish, Spearfish, Sea-Breams, Shark, Spanish Mackerel, Swordfish (Espadons), Tuna and Yellow Tail Snapper. So whether you are new to the sport or a deep-sea fishing enthusiast, the waters surrounding the Dominican Republic is a perfect deep-sea fishing destination.

Sport Fishing Charters
It is more likely that you will have an enjoyable trip if you rely upon licensed tour operators than asking a local fisherman to take you out. The tour operators have better access to modern boating equipment including life preservers, safety equipment, working radios and deep-sea fishing equipment. They can also take you along the coast or several miles offshore and have intimate knowledge of the best deep-sea fishing locations.
Dominican Republic deep-sea fishing charters are typically offered as either half-day or full-day excursions. For the half-day trip you will likely stay within sight of land for a 4 hour trip designed by the captain to give you the best chance at a quick catch. A full day trip, 6 to 8 hours, can take you out to sea further, likely out of sight of land, into the deeper waters where larger game fish can be found.

Unique Dominican Deep-Sea Fishing Locations
When researching deep-sea fishing in the Dominican Republic, you will often encounter the many deep-sea charters on the eastern coast near Punta Cana. While deep-sea fishing in this area offers many spots, you will also see a virtual flotilla of deep-sea charters heading out to sea almost daily. With so many deep-sea anglers, you are just one of many trolling the depths for that elusive prize we all dream of while fishing.
In stark contrast, Dominican deep-sea fishing on the north coast is unique, pristine and unspoiled compared to these hectic charter flotillas. The north coast has very few ports capable of harboring deep-sea fishing boats so very few exist. Yet just a few miles north of the port at Rio San Juan are the famous Silver Banks, a virtual mecca of deep-sea fish in a protected marine area.
Remember, the north coast of the Dominican Republic abuts the Atlantic Ocean. The Silver Bank and Navidad Bank marine areas are just north of the country, approximately 24 nautical miles offshore. Each of these areas are protected marine sanctuaries under the control of the Dominican Republic. The Silver Bank is the largest of these, at over 1680 square kilometers in size with depths as shallow as 60 feet.
For the deep-sea sport fisherman, the unique characteristic of these amazing unspoiled areas is the proximity to our area. Relying on custom-designed, super-fast deep-sea fishing boats, you can be in proximity of the Silver Bank in approximately 2 hours. The marine area harbors many feeder fish so just outside of the sanctuary the area is teeming with a variety of sport fish including Blue Marlin, Bonito, Barracuda, Tuna, Dorado (Mahi-Mahi) and Wahoo.
Imagine, you awake in your luxury villa and take in a bountiful breakfast, fresh Dominican coffee and fruit juices. Golden Dolphins own charter company collects you from the villa and whisks you to Rio San Juan where you board the custom-designed deep-sea boat. In 2 hours you are line wet trolling for the monster sport fish we all dream about.
Fish for 1/2 day or a full day, for when you return you will be bragging about the ones you caught and those who got away. Returning back to your luxury villa rental, you can have a masseuse standing by to relax those muscles and prepare you for a sumptuous meal cooked just the way you like it. Fishing is catch and release, of course, but you might be dining on a cousin of the one you caught!
